At a glance

ISO 14001 provides a framework for managing environmental responsibilities. For a business in Vietnam, a useful first step is to identify the activities with important environmental effects, assign responsibilities and collect comparable evidence.

  • Focus: a coordinated approach to environmental management.
  • Start here: review the site, available consumption records and existing controls.
  • For an existing certificate: confirm the edition and transition arrangements with the certification body.

Electricity consumption, water use, waste storage and complaints from neighbouring businesses are often managed by different teams. An environmental management system helps a company bring these activities into one coordinated programme, with clear priorities and responsibilities.

What is ISO 14001, and which edition is current?

ISO 14001 is a standard for environmental management systems. As checked on 10 September 2026, the current published edition is ISO 14001:2026, released in April 2026. Businesses using the 2015 edition should discuss transition arrangements with their certification body. Source: ISO — ISO 14001:2026.

Do not assume that publication of the new standard automatically invalidates an existing certificate, or that an ISO edition and its Vietnamese national adoption have the same publication date. Confirm the precise reference, certificate status and applicable transition requirements for your organization.

Turn environmental concerns into a manageable starting list

For a Vietnamese manufacturer, an initial walkthrough might follow materials from receipt to storage, production and dispatch. For a warehouse or office, it might focus on electricity, packaging and waste collection. These are suggested examples; the important issues will differ by site and activity.

A useful working sheet can have five fields: activity, possible environmental effect, existing control, responsible person and next review date. Begin with real observations. A polished spreadsheet is of little value if it omits an outdoor storage area or a contractor’s activities.

A practical preparation sequence

  1. Set the boundary. Identify the sites, operations and outsourced activities that need to be considered.
  2. Build an initial environmental picture. Use a site walkthrough, available consumption records and staff observations.
  3. Identify priorities. Ask competent personnel to help assess significant issues and applicable obligations.
  4. Assign an action owner. Choose a small number of improvements with a clear budget, deadline and evidence of completion.
  5. Collect comparable information. Use consistent meters, units, boundaries and reporting periods.
  6. Review results and readiness. Investigate weak controls and consult the applicable standard before arranging an external assessment.

This is a suggested project sequence, not a complete statement of ISO requirements. Obtaining a certificate also does not remove the need to identify and meet applicable environmental obligations.

An example: understanding water consumption

Imagine a facility noticing higher monthly water bills. Before purchasing new equipment, the team could check meter boundaries, occupancy and production volume. An increase may reflect greater output, a leak, cleaning practices or a change in what the meter measures.

Suggested measures include total consumption and consumption per relevant unit of activity. Record the assumptions behind each measure. A lower ratio can be useful, but it should not conceal a rise in total consumption. Set improvement targets only after establishing a credible starting point.

How should an existing ISO 14001:2015 user prepare?

ISO announced the new edition in April 2026. A sensible next step is a structured gap review using the new standard, followed by an agreed transition plan. Avoid relying on a generic online deadline without checking its applicability to your certificate. Source: ISO — Publication announcement.

  • Confirm the edition, scope and status shown on the existing certificate.
  • Ask the certification body for the applicable transition arrangements in writing.
  • Identify changes to responsibilities, controls or evidence before scheduling training.
  • Plan internal review and the external assessment around actual readiness.

ISO 14001 frequently asked questions

Does ISO issue the certificate?

No. Certification is provided by independent certification bodies, not ISO. Source: ISO — Certification.

Does certification mean a product is environmentally harmless?

Do not use a management-system certificate to make an unsupported product claim. Keep statements specific to the certified organization, scope and edition, and substantiate separate product claims with appropriate evidence.

What should a first discussion cover?

Prepare a site list, a short description of operations, available environmental records and any existing certificate. This gives advisers and certification providers a clearer basis for discussing scope, workload and cost.

Does publication of ISO 14001:2026 immediately invalidate a 2015 certificate?

Do not assume automatic invalidation. Ask the certification body to confirm the certificate’s status and the transition requirements that apply to the organization.

Which records should a business prepare first?

Start with a site and activity list, available consumption records, existing environmental controls and any current certificate. A competent review can then identify the specific evidence and obligations relevant to the site.
